SUWON LEE 

This piece is a study of the natural light phenomenon known as the the Catatumbo Lightning, carried out throughout four hours of one night during the time in which the flashes of these thunderstorms happen.
Beyond the environmental and social impact of this phenomenon, my intention is to reflect its light and pictorial qualities in relation to the landscape that serves as the background, because these qualities have the greatest impact on the population; they serve not only as a guide for navigation but as a testimony to the power of nature and its sublime character.
Inspired by traveling painters such as Ferdinand Bellerman and Anton Goering and in the scientific accounts of Alexander Von Humboldt and Agustin Codazzi, the sixteen photographic shots that make up the piece reveal different intensities, luminosities and contrasts, which become even more dramatic due to the cloud cover. All these elements create a complex light situation: the lightning is not shown at its maximum power but tinted and veiled, it creates a mysterious atmosphere.

Esta pieza es un estudio de la luz del fenómeno natural conocido como el Relámpago del Catatumbo, realizado a lo largo de una noche durante el período de cuatro horas al momento en que se suceden los fulgores de estas tormentas eléctricas.

Más allá del impacto ambiental y social que tiene este fenómeno, mi intención es reflejar las cualidades lumínicas y pictóricas del mismo en relación al paisaje que le sirve de fondo, por cuanto son estas cualidades las que mayor incidencia tienen sobre la población; sirven no solo como guía para la navegación sino como testimonio del poder de la naturaleza y su carácter sublime.

Inspirada en los pintores viajeros como Ferdinand Bellerman y Anton Goering y en los relatos científicos de Alexander Von Humboldt y Agustín Codazzi, en las dieciséis tomas fotográficas que componen la pieza se revelan intensidades, luminosidades y contrastes diferentes, que se tornan aún más dramáticos debido a la nubosidad. Todos estos elementos crean una situación lumínica compleja: el Relámpago no se muestra en su máxima potencia sino matizado y velado, creando una atmósfera misteriosa.
