Artist residency: JOYA Air, Almería, Spain. October 2020

From Oct 2-17, 2020 I was an artist in residence at Joya: AiR in the region of Andalucia, in the south of Spain.
Following the line of research into the self, my plan was to use the privileged access to nature and the arid landscape of Almería to create works where human presence is portrayed in interaction with the elements, reconnecting with the land and being one with it.
The connection between the physical body and the elements in the natural world is essential, as both are directly linked to the numinous, the divine power that permeates all the cosmos.
Being away from Madrid during this second wave of COVID looming over all of Europe in a 20-hectare terrain of arid landscape free to roam around and breathe without the need of masks nor social distancing, I was able to listen to myself and the sounds that nature offered me.
Accepting chaos and letting silence and calmness sink in.

A daily process of meditation, exploration, observation, and listening gave rise to a collection of rocks and new work.
Inspired by the Silueta series by Ana Mendieta, by an ongoing research concerning women who have worked on the self-portrait as well as by studies into mystical and tantric texts, I chose a small barranco to make my land art piece. Here are some images of the final work and the process:

Self-portrait as consciousness of time (Autorretrato como conciencia del tiempo)
Today, October 16, 2020 I thank you, Simon Quentin, Donna and Simon David, for being here with me to inaugurate this site-specific installation. Thanks to JOYA, I have been able to come into contact with the Earth, our precious treasure, our fountain of life and our home.
Time has neither beginning nor end. There has always been and will always be change, which can be labeled as the passage of time.
I have lived through many lives in all conceivable life forms, from the unicellular, the invertebrate, the aquatic, the reptile, insect, animal and human form. From all realms of existence in the ten dimensions, I have been born again and again, and in this life I call myself Suwon. Born from the Good star and the Bright Jade, my name means fountain of cultivation. I have spent my life cultivating, nourishing, enriching, preparing and knowing myself.
Here in this barranco, I have known myself in this self-portrait made with stones, the ancient and wise witnesses of time. These stones, just like us, are the product of the coming together of the elements: fire, water, earth, wind and space. They are the very essence of the universe and they remind us that ‘As it is outside, so it is within the body’.
Today, before you three who are my witnesses, I bury myself into the ground of Almería, I bury my symbolic body, and I merge with this land.
I dedicate this piece to all my ancestors, the women and men who came together to bring forth life, and who faced hardships and trials in order to live a worthy life.
This piece exists for today. It is ephemeral, and it may be destroyed by the force of nature or by the human hand. May it be a constant reminder of impermanence and of the consciousness of the passage of time.
As the waters of the rain and riverbeds carry away everything in its path year after year, century after century, millenia after millenia, so may our lives also carry us towards the paths that we are meant to take and discover our purest essence and consciousness.
May we all reach a splendid, pure inner world while still living in our imperfect, earthly one.

The residency
Simon and Donna Beckmann purchased an abandoned rural farm back in 2009 in the heart of the Sierra María-Los Vélez Natural Park, Almería and turned it into an off-grid, carbon-positive 20-hectare (that's 200,000 square meters) terrain. They have also hosted more than 700 artists up to now.
The Beckmanns are devoting their lives to creating a haven for art, culture, science, sustainability, ecology and history. The farm they purchased has been transformed into a large, comfortable house with several bedrooms, artist studios, and living and kitchen areas beautifully and stylishly decorated with gorgeous antique furniture (Donna's family inheritance), Murano glassware, local ceramic pieces and of course, artwork. The result is a welcoming place where you immediately feel at home and safe to venture out into the surrounding wilderness, an immense privilege in these pandemic times. Artists from all disciplines and writers are welcome to apply for a 1-2 week residency.
All COVID19 safety measures are carefully guarded, we kept our distance and used masks and gels at all times. One of the two weeks that I spent there, one was shared with Eva Grande and Paloma Navarro, a painter and linguist who reside in Toledo. The rest of the time there were no other temporary residents. Simon Linington, an artist from the UK is a long-term resident who has been multiple times to Joya and is currently developing a site-specific sculpture by the new natural swimming pool area.
Their aim is to restore the degraded land, which is highly effective for both carbon sequestration and re-creating habitats for native wildlife. These are two essential mitigations against climate change.
Del 2 al 17 de octubre de 2020 fui artista residente en Joya: AiR en la región de Andalucía, en el sur de España.
Siguiendo la línea de investigación sobre el yo, mi plan era aprovechar el acceso privilegiado a la naturaleza y el árido paisaje de Almería para crear obras donde la presencia humana se retrata en interacción con los elementos, reconectando con la tierra y siendo una con ella.
La conexión entre el cuerpo físico y los elementos del mundo natural es fundamental, ya que ambos están directamente ligados a lo numinoso, el poder divino que impregna todo el cosmos.
Estando lejos de Madrid durante esta segunda ola de COVID que se cierne sobre toda Europa en un terreno de 20 hectáreas de paisaje árido libre para deambular y respirar sin necesidad de máscarillas ni distanciamiento social, llegué a escucharme a mí misma y a los sonidos que la naturaleza me ofreció.
Aceptando el caos y dejando que el silencio y la calma penetraran.

Una obra efímera de land art .
Un proceso diario de meditación, exploración, observación y escucha me llevaron a la recolección de piedras y a la realización de nuevas obras.
Inspirada en la serie Silueta de Ana Mendieta y en una investigación en curso sobre mujeres que han trabajado el autorretrato, además de lecturas de textos místicos y tántricos, elegí un pequeño barranco para albergar mi modesta pieza de land art. Autorretrato como conciencia del tiempo
Hoy, 16 de octubre de 2020, les agradezco a ustedes Simon Quentin, Donna y Simon David, por estar aquí conmigo para inaugurar esta instalación específica del sitio. Gracias a JOYA he podido entrar en contacto con la Tierra, nuestro preciado tesoro, nuestra fuente de vida y nuestro hogar.
El tiempo no tiene principio ni fin. Siempre ha habido y siempre habrán cambios, que se pueden etiquetar como el paso del tiempo.
He vivido muchas vidas en todas las formas de vida imaginables, desde el unicelular, el invertebrado, el acuático, el reptil, insecto, animal y humano. De todos los reinos de la existencia en las diez dimensiones, he nacido una y otra vez, y en esta vida me llamo Suwon. Nacida de la Buena Estrella y el Jade Brillante, mi nombre significa fuente de cultivación. He pasado mi vida cultivándome, nutriéndome, enriqueciéndome, preparándome y conociéndome.
Aquí, en este barranco, me he conocido en este autorretrato hecho con piedras, los antiguos y sabios testigos del tiempo. Estas piedras, como nosotros, son producto de la unión de los elementos: fuego, agua, tierra, viento y espacio. Son la esencia misma del universo y nos recuerdan que "como es afuera, así es dentro del cuerpo".
Hoy, ante ustedes tres que son mis testigos, me entierro en Almería, entierro mi cuerpo simbólico, y me fusiono con esta tierra.
Dedico esta pieza a todos mis antepasados, las mujeres y los hombres que se unieron para dar a luz la vida y que enfrentaron dificultades y pruebas para vivir una vida digna.
Esta pieza existe para hoy. Es efímera y puede ser destruida por la fuerza de la naturaleza o por la mano humana. Que sea un recordatorio constante de la impermanencia y de la conciencia del paso del tiempo.
Así como las aguas de la lluvia y los cauces se llevan todo a su paso año tras año, siglo tras siglo, milenio tras milenio, que nuestras vidas también nos lleven hacia los caminos que estamos destinados a tomar y a descubrir nuestra más pura esencia y conciencia.
Que todos alcancemos un mundo interior puro y espléndido mientras vivimos en nuestro mundo imperfecto y terrenal.
Que estés a salvo

Que estés sana
Que vivas con facilidad

Simon y Donna Beckmann compraron una finca rural abandonada en 2009 en el corazón del Parque Natural Sierra María-Los Vélez, Almería, y la convirtieron en un terreno de 20 hectáreas (200.000 metros cuadrados) auto-sustentable y carbono-positivo. También han acogido a más de 700 artistas hasta la fecha.
Los Beckmann están dedicando sus vidas a crear un refugio para el arte, la cultura, la ciencia, la sostenibilidad, la ecología y la historia. La finca que compraron se ha transformado en una casa amplia y cómoda con varios dormitorios, estudios de artistas y áreas de estar y de cocina decoradas de manera hermosa y elegante con majestuosos muebles antiguos (herencia de la familia de Donna), cristalería de Murano, piezas de cerámica locales y, por supuesto, obras de arte. El resultado es un lugar acogedor donde inmediatamente se siente una como en casa y segura para aventurarse en la naturaleza circundante, un inmenso privilegio en estos tiempos de pandemia. Los artistas de todas las disciplinas así como escritores pueden solicitar una residencia de 1 a 2 semanas.
Todas las medidas de seguridad de COVID19 están cuidadosamente resguardadas, mantuvimos nuestra distancia y usamos mascarillas y gel en todo momento. Una de las dos semanas que pasé allí, la compartí con Eva Grande y Paloma Navarro, artista y lingüista respectivamente residentes en Toledo. El resto del tiempo no hubo otros residentes temporales. Simon Linington, un artista del Reino Unido es un residente a largo plazo que ha estado varias veces en Joya y actualmente está desarrollando una escultura específica junto al área de la nueva piscina natural.
El objetivo de los Beckmann es también restaurar la tierra degradada, que es altamente eficaz tanto para el secuestro de carbono como para la recreación de hábitats para la vida silvestre endémica. Estos son dos factores esenciales de mitigación contra el cambio climático.
